Mr. Ortega had a childhood just like you and me but he has been teaching and being a TA for over ten years. When he was at Mulholland Middle School he was suspended nine times. The only reason he stayed in school was because he got straight A’s . . . He first started by being a soccer coach. He really loved doing it, so then he went to Bassett to be a TA for a few teachers. Then he went to college where he was a full time student and a member of the soccer team. He said he would wake up, go to work, go to practice, and then go to school. He had one major, one minor, and earned one teaching credential. Now he is in charge of the math department. The following are some of the questions I asked him:
“ Do you feel that your childhood helped you pursue a career in education?
“ Yes, because I saw my friends or people have such a hard time that I wanted it to be changed. I like to help people.”
“ How did you get into the education career?
“ I coached a soccer team for quite a while. Then I loved doing it, so I decided to go back to school, I was a TA at Basset Elementary for about 3 ½ years. Then I became a teacher.
“When you were in school were you in trouble a lot?”
“ Well I suspended from Mulholland Middle School about nine times .”
“Were you proud of your grades?”
“Yes, I got straight A’s in High School.”
“If you could would you change anything in your childhood?”
“No, because everything that I have experienced has helped me become mature and grow up to become what I am today.”
